With 5G technology gaining ground with the advent of 2020 and the market revolution expected with the same, the hype around the market opportunity has raised expectations. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon joined the 5G expectations club.
Addressing the audience, Amon reportedly said that over 340 operators were investing in 5G globally, including over 45 with 5G has already been deployed. Qualcomm was expecting over 200 Mn 5G smartphones “just one category of devices” to be shipped over the year.
He further said that with the growing adoption of 5g, the number of shipped 5G smartphones will be over 750 Mn, and 5G connections should cross 1 Bn by 2023. This would be two years faster than 4G reached the billion-mark.
Qualcomm expects that with this, 5G will reach 2.8 Bn 5G connections by 2025. From the company’s end, Qualcomm is investing towards snapdragon 8- and 7- series chips.
Qualcomm also co-announced the launch of Lenovo’s Yoga 5G, which they billed as the world’s first 5G PC. The company also introduced a new car-to-cloud services platform, as well as a new reference platform to advance Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology.
5G is the fifth generation technology that increases the downloading and uploading speeds over the mobile network, reduces latency and offers a more stable network across connections.
5G offer will provide a download speed of 1Gbps, which is at least 100 times the existing data speeds. It will allow users to download even HD versions in seconds. 5G also works under a wider frequency to ensure zero network congestion.
Mobile networks can transport data at speeds up to 1 Gbps under 4G currently. With 5G wireless networks, performance will increase with data speed as fast as 10 Gbps. Telecom operators in the US have already started testing 5G networks in select regions. Besides the US, South Korea and Japan are also working on deploying 5G soon.
In India, according to a 2019 Ericsson report, the 5G network will make inroads by 2022. However, to push the early adoption of 5G, the government has started to shift its focus to this new-age technology.
The 5G trials are one of the most-awaited and promised projects of the government. It is predicted that the 5G technology will create a cumulative economic impact of $1 Tn in India by 2035. The government has reiterated its focus on 5G spectrum auctions, including 5G airwaves that are scheduled to be held by March 2020. 5G networks are expected to be launched in India by 2020.
