Inc42 Daily Brief
Stay Ahead With Daily News & Analysis on India’s Tech & Startup Economy
Just like every year, Forbes magazine has released the 2017 Midas List including the top 100 tech venture capital investors.
It’s hard for a VC to stay on top of their game. It requires an appetite for risk, immense calculations, and maybe a tiny bit of luck as well.
The podium is taken by Jim Goetz, Partner at Sequoia Capital. He has retained his position at the top of the list from 2016. He’s closely followed by Chris Sacca, founder and Chairman of Lowercase Capital. He’s moved up a position to #2 from last year in the list. Peter Fenton, General Partner at Benchmark Capital, has also made a jump to #3 from last year’s #4.
The fourth and fifth positions are occupied by Steve Anderson and Brian Singerman, respectively. As per a Forbes report, Singerman is the biggest mover this year, making a huge jump from #36 to #5, sitting on the back of his $300 Mn investment in cancer stem cell-targeting drug maker Stemcentrx. The company was acquired last year, allowing Singerman’s company to earn $1.4 Bn in pure profits.
Unlike last year, there’s not a single woman VC in the top five this year. Six women VCs in total made it to the list, namely: Mary Meeker, Rebecca Lynn, Jenny Lee, Theresia Gouw, Ann Miura-Ko, and Kristen Green, the latter three being new additions from 2016. Also, this year, 11 India origin VCs are in the list, representing mastery in the craft of investments.
Additionally, Carl Gordon of OrbiMed has made his way to the top 10, sitting gleefully at #8, up from last year’s #20. The most represented firms still continue to be Sequoia, Benchmark, Greylock and Accel, but new firms are starting to break out as well. Floodgate has two representatives this year, Lightspeed Venture Partners also have three VCs carrying the torch in the list. Nine newcomers have risen to fame this year, with 12 of the 100 being billionaires.
What goes into making the list: Forbes and TrueBridge Capital Partners collect data from publicly available sources as well as through many direct submissions from the firms themselves. Where Midas provides a five-year look-back at a partner’s portfolio, with exits by IPO or acquisition of $200 Mn and above, and private holdings that raised money at valuations of $400 Mn or more over that time period.
[The list is in the order of their ranking as per Forbes Midas. The information has been sourced from websites such as Wikipedia, investors’ LinkedIn profiles, and Crunchbase.]
