From maximising sales and revenue through door-to-door salespeople to reaching customers on ecommerce and social media platforms, the direct-to-consumer (D2C) industry had undergone an incredible business transformation since 2020, the year when the Covid-19 pandemic compelled companies to override lockdowns and social distancing to remain operational and sustainable. With the technology leap from the traditional format to digitalisation happening in a matter of days, many businesses in India — no matter how big or small, young or old — have pivoted to the D2C model. Today, India is home to more than 800 D2C brands across categories, targeting an estimated $100 Bn+ addressable market by 2025.

Given the current scenario, Inc42 has been actively tracking and covering the D2C ecosystem over the past year. A thorough exploration of this space has also revealed that many brands fail to tap into the D2C opportunity due to the lack of know-how and guidance. To bridge this gap through effective hand-holding by industry experts, we decided to launch another D2C Day in July this year.

Of course, this is not our first conference covering the Indian D2C industry. The first edition was held in October 2020 and the second in December 2020. And now we are all set to host the third edition, a much bigger version than the past two, which will take a deep dive into the building of D2C brands, their operations and strategies.  The D2C Summit — India’s largest D2C and ecommerce conference — will bring together more than 1,000 people from the D2C ecosystem, including brands, enablers, retail giants and sellers, at the virtual industry event, to be held on July 17 and 18, 2021.

Supported by a host of storied brands such as Shiprocket, Deskera, WebEngage, Shipway and PayU, The D2C Summit will feature a stellar lineup of 50+ thought leaders, founders, investors, influencers and stalwarts from the D2C industry.

India’s D2C Opportunity: The D2C Summit Will Decode It All

The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic hit the traditional retail sector hard, making brands realise the importance of evolving into a digital-first D2C model. FMCG giants such as Johnson & Johnson, Himalaya, Hindustan Unilever, ITC and Lakme, which have dominated the Indian market for decades, are now challenged by young D2C startups like Mamaearth, The Moms Co, Azah and Nua, among others. The revenue numbers further validate this paradigm shift. For instance, popular beauty brands such as Revlon and Lotus took around 20 years to reach the INR 100 Cr revenue mark. But new-age brands like Mamaearth and Sugar took four and eight years, respectively, to cross that milestone.

According to an analysis by Inc42 Plus, Indian D2C brands have raised more than $2.04 Bn in funding since 2014. More importantly, this segment is one of the biggest contributors to the ecommerce industry’s revival and growth in the past year. The rise of the D2C brands has also fuelled the growth and significance of the businesses that provide a host of support solutions to these brands (enablers, to be precise) in crucial areas such as development, logistics, payments, marketing and more.

“Third-party logistics and fulfilment vendors not only help these D2C merchants sustain their ventures but also enable them to scale up with the right tech stack and automation. Coupled with the fact that online shopping brings immense convenience to end-users, I think D2C has a very bright future in India,” said Saahil Goel, cofounder and CEO of Shiprocket, a logistics software company.

“D2C has become an ultra-necessity in today’s world where social distancing is the new normal. Even after the pandemic subsides, I believe that the D2C market in India is not just here to stay but will grow rapidly,” added Goel.

In essence, The D2C Summit aims to fulfil many purposes. It will decode the massive $100 Bn market opportunity, highlight the role of the enablers and act as a guide to the brands in their scale-up journey by presenting key topics such as marketing, logistics, funding scenario and, of course, the learning from some of the biggest D2C brands in India.

With speakers such as Deepak Shahdadpuri (managing director, DSG Consumer Partners), Aman Gupta (cofounder and CMO, boAt), Vivek Gupta (cofounder, Licious), The D2C Summit will bring together the stalwarts and the torchbearers of India’s D2C wave under a single roof.
