Alibaba Launches Global Ecommerce Talents Programme In India; Aims To Develop Entrepreneurial Skills In Students, SMBs

Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba has launched its Global Ecommerce Talents (GET) programme in India.

The programme will address students, small business professionals, and entrepreneurs, to provide them with skills and resources to prepare them for a global ecommerce industry, as per an official statement.

Commenting on the development, K Guru Gowrappan, Global Managing Director and Head of India, Alibaba Group said, “We are delighted to introduce this unique programme in India where the ecommerce industry holds enormous potential for expansion.”

The first batch of GET in India will be partnered by the Centre of Ecommerce Excellence, Indian Institute of Ecommerce, First EduIndia Limited, and Unified Growth Foundation.

In its first phase of execution, the programme will be available for the students of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) and Kalinga University.

Alibaba has been operating in India since 2007. The marketplace had around 6 Mn registered Indian buyers and sellers as of early 2016, according to an official statement. In May 2015, through its marketplace AliExpress, Alibaba entered the Indian ecommerce market. With this move, AliExpress got into a strategic tie-up with Indian mobile wallet company Paytm.

In August 2016, reports surfaced that Alibaba had held discussions to acquire online marketplace ShopClues. In September 2016, it launched a programme called Trade Facilitation Centre (TFC) in a bid to provide platform users with tailor-made services for their business.

In another development, ecommerce and payments platform Paytm has announced that K. Guru Gowrappan, Global Managing Director of the Alibaba Group will join its board of Directors as an Additional Director.
