At a time when Indian startups are looking to create global brands, a TRA research report shows that the most desired internet brands in India are still international in origin.

The TRA survey of the most desired internet brands in India saw Amazon topping the charts, followed by Google and Facebook in second and third position. But even though these global technology giants are expected to be quite popular in India, many Indian startups have also made it to the lis among internet brands.

This list of most desired Indian internet brands includes food delivery aggregator Zomato, cab-hailing company Ola,  video streaming platform Zee5, beauty marketplace Nykaa, hospitality chain OYO, food delivery company Swiggy, digital payments company Paytm, ecommerce marketplace Flipkart, video streaming platform Voot and more.

The survey of most desired internet brands in India had 30 brands of which 16 are Indian, 12 the from the United States and two from China — Club Factory and TikTok.

“It’s interesting to see Indian internet brands dominate the list. Due to data democratisation, nearly 34% of Indian have easy and cheap availability of data. It has been a phenomenal growth over the last 5 years and has huge potential.” – N. Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research.

The brands that offered quality of consistent service, availability and ease of use, seemed to dominate the desire among consumers, the CEO said.

TRA’s Most Desired Internet Brands 2020 included 10 new entrants, showing swift consumer acceptance and rejection patterns.

In today’s hypercompetitive world, brand perception for tech companies can make or break the market. It’s the sum of our feelings, attitudes, and experiences with a product or service, and when dealing with a number of competitors, brand perception can be the difference between getting new customers and losing your existing ones.

A YouGov BrandIndex report on top 10 brands in India saw Google topping the list, followed by OnePlus and MakeMyTrip, which stood at the second and third place. The list also included Swiggy from India’s startup club, but no other internet brands of Indian origin showed up. Surprising, given that OYO has a significant global presence.

In recent times, companies have morphed their branding to suit a more global audience. UrbanClap, for instance, rebranded itself to Urban Company, so that the name has better resonance in the global market as it looks to expand overseas.
