In a bid to remain competitive in the next generation direct-to-home (DTH) services, DTH service provider Tata Sky has launched Tata Sky Binge+ service.

According to a report by Times Now, besides providing television channels, Tata Sky Binge+ will provide over-the-top video streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Hotstar, SunNxt, Zee5, Eros Now and Hungama.

The set-top box is also equipped with the Google Assistant-based voice search. Moreover, a user can also download other applications, which can be used on television, from the Google Play Store.

The company has launched this Tata Sky Binge+ device at INR 5999. While currently, Tata Sky is also offering a one-month free trial, the company is reportedly going to charge INR 249 per month for the service. The company has also started selling Tata Sky Binge+ device on its website. Tata Sky Binge+ set-top box is powered with two gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and eight gigabytes of internal storage.

In this niche segment, Tata Sky’s new offering will compete against Airtel’s Xstream set-top box, Reliance JioFiber and Dish TV’s Dish SMRT Hub. Airtel, in September 2019, had launched two new products — Airtel Xstream Box and Xstream Stick — to provide a single platform for all entertainment needs of the viewers.

To step up the game further, the Xstream Box also offers advanced gaming with high end-graphics and 4K streaming and costs INR 3,999, which is little less than Tata Sky Binge+. However, when it comes to monthly pricing, Airtel has priced the service at INR 999 for a month.

On the other hand, JioFiber, which was launched in September 2019, is currently priced at INR 700-10K per month depending on the plan selected by the user. On top of JioFiber, the company is planning to launch a host of services such as mixed reality (VR+AR) applications, gaming set-top box and an OTT platform. Mixed reality (AR+VR) experiences will be available on JioFiber and can be used for shopping, education and entertainment purposes. Additionally, the platform allows users to watch movies on the same day it is released.
