Creating Better Future For Farmers With eNam And Other Facilities: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while attending an award function in Tumukuru, Karnataka, on Thursday (January 2), said that agriculture plays an important role in helping India achieve the dream of becoming five trillion-dollar economy by 2024.

Apart from solving problems maligning the agricultural sector, PM Modi said that the government is working towards creating a better future for farmers in India. It has facilitated Indian farmers to sell their produce on e-mandi via eNam network, cold storage facilities, and logistics facilities among others.

eNam, Cold Storage Facilities And More 

An online marketplace for trading agriculture commodities eNam currently has a total of 1.65 Cr farmers from 18 states and union territories across India. The virtual network (e-mandi) is connected to 47 out of 189 market committees in the country. In 2018, the eNam witnessed a turnover of around INR 25 Cr and was expected to reach 30K Cr in 2019.

eNam was started in 2016 and is managed by Small Famer’s Agribusiness Consortium (SFAC) with the help of technology providers Nagarjuna Fertilisers and chemical Limited (NFCL), under iKisan initiative.

Apart from the online marketplace, the government, to ensure the produce is fresh and the quality is maintained, has implemented a Central sector scheme of cold chains, value addition and preservation infrastructure, Under this scheme, which has been active since 2008, the ministry of food processing industries has installed integrated cold chain infrastructure across India.

The scheme also helps farmers cover their entire infrastructure facilities along with the logistics assistance or supply chain facilities, be it pre-cooling, sorting, waxing facilities at farm level, blast freezing, mobile cooling units among others.

Govt Focuses On Export Of Cash Crop 

In an ET report, PM Modi at the Krishi Karman Awards functions said that the Central government is working towards increasing the production and export of spices in the country. Currently, the spices have crossed 25 Lakh tonne and their export has increased from INR 15K Cr to INR 19K Cr and the government is planning to boost the export of commercial and cash crop, globally, he added.

PM Modi, at the event, had also announced about electronically transferring of INR 12 Cr to six crore families of farmers across India under the PM-KISAN programme. The scheme is said to provide financial assistance and help small and marginal farmers across states and union territories.

Most schemes are currently managed by the central government, where it ensures to run the programmes in a most efficient manner, be it applying online, verification, collection of data and automating the fund transfer to the beneficiaries across the country. It uses MIS IT app that processes the schemes in a systematic way possible.
