Inc42 Daily Brief
Stay Ahead With Daily News & Analysis on India’s Tech & Startup Economy
With more than 57K startups and 100+ unicorns, India boasts the title of the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem. Indian startups are soaring high with potential, bringing novel technologies and innovations to the fore and disrupting traditional sectors like healthcare, financial services, retail and more.
As they have grown, startups have emerged as a lucrative asset class for investors at every stage. The billions of dollars of capital infusion has shown manyfold returns for angel investors, venture capital (VC) and private equity firms, creating massive value for those backing Indian startups.
Between 2014 and H1 2022, Indian startups raised a total of $131 Bn in funding which saw participation from 9K+ investors.
More than 1,100 merger and acquisition deals have been recorded in this time, offering favourable exits to many investors. Plus, the increasing viability of startup IPOs has further strengthened the confidence of investors in the ecosystem.
Despite the growing investor interest though, only 6%-8% of registered startups in India have successfully raised capital till now, according to Inc42 estimates. This leaves a massive opportunity that investors can tap and back new-age disruptors that offer a high upside.
That was the idea behind AngelX, Inc42’s first cohort-based angel investing programme, which saw 58 fellows learning the ins and outs of early-stage investments from a host of established angel investors. After four weeks of highly interactive sessions, we are taking things a notch higher with CapitalX.
CapitalX by Inc42 is a one-of-a-kind programme where you can learn the art and science of building and managing a top-decile micro VC fund from the top 1% capital investors in India. The four-week CapitalX programme begins in January 2023.
Learn The A To Z Of Building A Micro VC Fund In 4 Weeks
Micro VCs are emerging as a key investor class in the early stages for startups, and their emergence has coincided with the formalisation of startup investments with government regulations. These relatively smaller funds (with a corpus of less than $30 Mn) typically invest between seed and growth rounds, helping fuel startups that are on the verge of breaking out.
Due to this niche approach, micro VCs are increasingly seen as new firewood for the startup ecosystem.
In the past few years, several micro VCs have found a foothold in India with some of India’s top angel investors at the helm. Think Propell — launched by LetsVenture cofounder Shanti Mohan in 2022— or Sanjay Mehta-led 100x.VC which counts more than 80 early-stage startups in its portfolio. Then there are the likes of Better Capital founded by Vaibhav Domkundwar, which has already invested in over 200 early-stage startups to date.
These are just three examples from a field of micro VCs that are rising to the fore in India. Now is the perfect time for you to begin your journey and join the leagues of the who’s who of the startup world.
With CapitalX, a weekends-only programme spanning four weeks, you can directly engage and interact with India’s top fund managers, limited partners (LPs) and investors, learn from their experiences and gain insights on strategies they use to successfully invest in worthy startups.
At the end of the fourth week, each CapitalX fellow will get a chance to pitch their fund thesis to three marquee LPs and potentially even seek commitments for their future micro VC fund.
And of course, CapitalX is more than just a course — it’s an opportunity to network, interact and collaborate with aspiring venture capitalists.
