Ola, Uber Travel To Google, Plan To Offer Direct Cab Booking Via Search

In a recent development, online cab aggregators Ola and Uber have added a new service on their platforms. Users can now directly book a ride on these platforms from Google Search.

This comes in line with Google’s earlier development, where it integrated a separate tab in Google Maps with information regarding cab services for Indian users in addition to the existing driving, public transport, and walking options.

“Now with this integration, commuters across the country can ask Google for directions and book ride services directly from Google Search. They will get to see a tab for ride services, both Uber and Ola, with fare estimates and pick-up times if a car is available near their location,” Google said in an official statement.

Commenting on the development, Sanket Gupta, Program Manager, Google said, “Choosing the best transit option can be a task at times. Our aim is to help users simplify their everyday travel. With this, users will be able to order, explore and make quick comparisons about the best estimated taxi fare directly from Google Search results on their mobile.”

The users can use the tab and request a ride from either of the cab hailing platforms directly. In addition to that, if a user requests Google for specific information, for example a cab to airport, the Google Search browser will automatically direct the user to select the preferred cab operator, and will automatically open the app to book the ride.

If a user doesn’t already have the app installed in their phone, Google Search will direct them towards a link to install the app.

Ola and Uber have launched a fleet of services to capitalise on their market shares. Uber recently launched the feature to book a cab on Uber without the app too. In September 2016, Uber launched a trip scheduling service, to book a cab in advance. It is also planning to launch a new service – Uber Everything.

To tackle growing competition, Ola is in talks with Japan-based SoftBank to raise $500 Mn in its new round of funding. Healthcare network Practo has also tied up with Ola with an aim to provide integrated mobility to its users. Now users can book an Ola cab via Practo’s app ahead of their doctor’s appointment.
