Indian startups have not only become the flag bearers of domestic innovation but the leading names have also become global brands and industry leaders. And the burgeoning class of unicorns and soonicorn startups in India is also a testimony to the rapid rise of Indian startups in the global tech ecosystem.

With increased adoption of digital services and products, India is today home to 36 unicorns, with Unacademy being the latest to enter the elite club. Joining BYJU’S as the second edtech unicorn in India, Unacademy has supposedly set its eyes on international growth now. Besides, there are over 52 Indian startups that have the potential to enter the unicorn club by 2022, according to Inc42 Plus’ latest The State of Indian Startup Ecosystem report.

From a single unicorn in 2012, 10 in 2016, India has seen 36 startups attaining unicorn status with a current combined valuation of $119 Bn. These 36 unicorns have raised a combined funding of $36.1 Bn with Delhi NCR leading the list with 15 unicorns followed by Bengaluru which is home to 14 unicorns.

In terms of sectors, India’s unicorn club has 7 startups in the ecommerce segment followed by enterprise tech, consumer services and fintech having 6 unicorns each.

Looking ahead to the next decade, Inc42 has picked out 52 Indian startups that we have analysed as likely to become a unicorn by 2022. These 52 soonicorns have cumulatively raised $9.2 Bn (to date and in disclosed rounds).

Out of the 52 startups, a large number of soonicorns i.e. 18 startups are from fintech, followed by, 8 startups from ecommerce and 7 startups from consumer services sector. The list also includes 6 healthtech startups that have the potential to enter the unicorn club by 2022. In terms of locations, almost 40% i.e. 20 are based out of Bengaluru followed by 13 each in Delhi NCR and Mumbai.
