Inc42 Daily Brief
Stay Ahead With Daily News & Analysis on India’s Tech & Startup Economy
After a whirlwind 2021 when all funding and valuation records were broken, the focus in 2022 is on profitability, rationalising products and platforms and unlocking true value through revenue and other tangible metrics.
We all know the numbers by now — $42 Bn in funding and 42 new unicorns and over $400 Bn in value created by Indian startups, as per our data since 2014. But now there is rationalisation in valuation and greater expectation of profitability as globally investors get set for a temporary speed bump. Even the quarter-on-quarter funding has slowed down since the end of last year.
Amid this churn, we are seeing trends such as sustainable yet scalable models, creators and engagement built into the DNA of the product and new technologies such as metaverse and web3 that could change the future of all products.
As the digital economy and startups step into this brave new world in 2022 — from a services economy to a product-first nation — India is seeing new leaders emerging. These new product leaders are taking inspiration primarily from the tech role models that have laid the foundation over the decades, but also from global product leaders.
When we envisioned The Makers Summit in 2021, it was as a stage at the confluence of product, tech and business amid the peak of the funding boom. And this year, we are setting the stage for the next phase of startup evolution with The Makers Summit 2022, brought to you by Inc42 in association with Searce and Google Cloud and is supported by CleverTap, Deskera, Dukaan and Simpl.

The Makers Summit 2022 Themes
In 2022, we fully expect metaverse to become a bigger buzzword among Indian tech companies, given the massive focus by Facebook (now even called Meta), Microsoft, Amazon, Google and other tech giants. Indian web3 startups such as Hike’s Rush, Polygon, FanCraze, fitness platform Goqii, nCore Games, Adloid, OneRare, Avataar, MetaMall have all raised significant funding in the past two years to build their metaverse products, even as others join the web3 bandwagon.
At The Makers Summit 2022, we will be walking through the product models in web3, while also catching up with traditionally large sectors such as ecommerce, the emergence of super apps, quick commerce product strategies, the EV product ecosystem and more.
Other rivetting sessions are expected around the booming creator economy, the SMB SaaS space, fintech regulations and more. We will reveal the full agenda shortly, but it covers product-driven sectors such as healthtech, ecomemrce’s different avatars, gaming, edtech’s changing landscape and more.
Of course, thanks to our stellar lineup of product role models, we will also get some macro insights on some of the larger debates and issues in the tech ecosystem.
How do Vembu & Co view the new breed of entrepreneurs that have emerged with The Great Resignation in the past two years? How do these influential entrepreneurs see challenges such as reintegrating or maintaining remote teams and hybrid working? What are their tenets of culture and team building and more given the focus on corporate governance in the startup ecosystem today?
These answers and more will come at TMS 2022. Watch this space for the full agenda reveal.
