The Indian taxi market is estimated to be worth about $9 Bn (INR 54,000 Cr.), of which only 4-6% is organised. There are around 2.3 Mn taxis registered in India with homegrown players like Meru, OlaCabs, TaxiForSure. The entry of Uber has further intensified the competition among these.

Rocket Internet backed Tripda, an online ride sharing marketplace that connects people who need a ride to drivers who have empty seats in their cars, has announced its entry in India.

Tripda was launched earlier this year in Brazil, and since then it has expanded rapidly in over ten countries including the US and some Asian markets.

People can avail its services on web and mobile app platforms. The platform fills the important long-distance (often inter-state) travel market as a perfect alternative to buses, trains and short flights. Passengers and drivers can set personal travel preferences, exchange messages and mutually filter travel partners taking similar journeys.

Tripda verifies drivers and passengers to ensure security and safeguard user privacy, including offering a “Ladies Only” option for women seeking all-female rides. Also, for the benefit of the entire community, Tripda encourages community ratings and reviews by travelers who have taken rides together.

In India, the startup will be focusing on cities including Delhi, Mumbai/Pune and Bangalore operationally; but anyone outside these cities can use the service as well.
