Microsoft-owned code-hosting platform GitHub has reached 10 Mn developers in India, the company said. It also said that it has crossed 100 Mn developers on the platform globally.

With its fast growth in India, the market has emerged as the second largest one for GitHub, behind the US.

“In 2015, almost a third of developers on GitHub were from North America. Today, some of the fastest-growing regions are far away from the US for example, in Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America. In India alone, more than 10 Mn developers use GitHub to build software. And in Brazil, over 3 Mn new developers use GitHub,” Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub, said in a blogpost.

It is to be noted that the software development platform announced the launch of its India-based subsidiary GitHub India Private Limited in 2020 to get more developers and enterprise customers from the country.

Founded in 2008, GitHub was developed by Chris Wanstrath, PJ Hyett, Tom Preston-Werner and Scott Chacon. GitHub now serves as the default hosting service for millions of open source and proprietary software projects, allowing developers to collaborate around shared codebases from disparate locations.

Back in 2018, tech giant Microsoft acquired GitHub for $7.5 Bn in Microsoft stock.

For Microsoft, GitHub serves to help integrate it with the software development sphere, having initially treated open source software, while it’s also using GitHub and its associated data to develop a new AI-powered pair programmer called Copilot.

Last year, GitHub made its developer platform for startups available in India. Eligible startups in India, and globally, would receive up to 20 seats of GitHub Enterprise free for one year. Moreover, the startups would also be provided with support and guidance from GitHub technical experts, the company said.

GitHub’s platform also partnered with some of the major venture capital, accelerator, and startup support organisations to offer its developer platform to startups in their ecosystems.

According to Statista data, revenue in the Indian software market is projected to reach $7.72Bn in 2023. The market’s largest segment is Enterprise Software with a projected market volume of $3.13 Bn in 2023. Overall market volume is estimated to reach $12.01 Bn by 2027, with an annual compound annual growth rate of 11.67%, during 2023-2027.
