British automotive brand MG Motor has launched its premium MG ZS EV in the Indian market, and while that is reserved for the affluent set of the population, the company also announced that it would develop a concept electric vehicle (EV) for the affordable segment, priced under INR 10 Lakh.

According to an ET report, MG Motor director Rajeev Chaba said it has already started working on the project, taking suggestions and inputs of local consumers in the country. Chaba said that MG, which is owned by Chinese company SAIC Motor, is currently evaluating various aspects like the production, battery cost, capacity, range among other issues.

Most importantly, MG Motor is designing the electric vehicle concept by focussing on Indian consumer demands, which includes pricing, range efficiency and design. The concept is expected to be ready sometime next year. The production of the electric vehicle might start in the next three to four years, he added.

In theory, the company believes that if its EV concept becomes successful on a commercial scale, MG Motor plans to expand its product to other countries that have similar markets like India. Currently, the electric vehicle is in the concept stage, it will be one of the most anticipated series for EV enthusiasts and economical Indian consumers.

MG Motor Is Bullish On Indian EV Market

MG’s new electric vehicles will be manufactured in Halol, Gujarat factory. MG Motor facility has capacity to produce 3,100-3,200 units of the vehicles per month. In the coming days, the company plans to increase its production further, once it switches to BS VI emission standards in April 2020.

MG Motor plans to launch four electric vehicles in the Indian market eventually.

MG Motor launched the MG ZS electric vehicle in India this week. The electric SUV is priced in the range of INR 22 Lakh to INR 25 Lakh. Besides in launching its EV in India, the company has aggressively started installing charging infrastructure across India. It installed its first EV fast-charging station in Gurugram on November 19, 2019.

Earlier in July 2019, MG Motor had also partnered with cleantech company Fortum Charge to install 50 KW CCS and Chademo DC public fast-charging stations for electric vehicles across India, including Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. Additionally, to push the installation of charging stations at consumers’ homes, MG Motor has also partnered with a Delhi-based eChargeBays.
