Meta Actioned 23.78 Mn Content Pieces Across Facebook, Instagram In August 2022

Social media giant Meta took action against 23.78 Mn content pieces on its Facebook and Instagram platforms in the month of August 2022, according to its monthly compliance report. 

A breakdown of the data revealed that Meta actioned more than 20.88 Mn content pieces on Facebook, a majority of which were flagged for spam and adult nudity and sexual activity.

Spam pieces accounted for 12.6 Mn content pieces, followed by adult nudity and sexual activity (2.4 Mn), violent and graphic content (2.2 Mn), child endangerment and sexual exploitation (957.8K), and suicide and self injury (344.9K).

The proactive action rate on Facebook ranged between 76.7% to 99.8%.

Proactive action rate refers to the percentage of content flagged by the company before being reported by users.

Facebook also received 724 reports via various local grievance mechanisms in August, and responded to all of them, as per the report. A majority of these complaints were related to ‘account hacked issues’ and ‘other issues.’

Facebook provided tools for resolution in 666 cases out of the 724 reports, including channels to report content for specific violations and for avenues to address account hacked issues, among other grievances.

For the remaining 58 reports, specialised review was needed and the platform took action on 26 of them. The other 32 reports were also reviewed but ‘may not have been actioned’ owing to a slew of reasons. 

On the other hand, Meta actioned more than 2.9 Mn pieces of content on its video sharing platform Instagram. A majority of these pertained to suicide and self-injury (906.2K), violent and graphic content (748.3K) and adult nudity and sexual content (643.6K).

Proactive action rate on Instagram ranged between 69.8% and 99.6%.

In August, Instagram received 1,111 reports through its Indian grievance mechanism. A majority of the complaints related to identity theft issues (659), account hacked issues (244), Other Issues (99), and others.

Instagram provided resolution tools for users in 973 cases, including channels to report content and ways to address account hacked issues, among others. 

Specialised review was needed in the remaining 138 reports  and the social media platform took action on 42 of these grievances. 96 reports were reviewed but may not have been actioned due to reasons such as non-violation of norms, feedback, among other reasons. 

In July, Meta had acted on 27.2 Mn content pieces on Facebook and Instagram platforms largely for reasons including spam and self-injury. 

Meanwhile, Twitter, in its latest compliance report for the period between July 26, 2022 and August 25, 2022, said that it received 1,088 complaints and took down 41 uniform resource locators (URLs).

It is worth noting that social media platforms with more than 5 Mn users are mandated under the new IT Rules, 2021 to publish monthly compliance reports.
