Meta Took Action Against Over 27 Mn Content Pieces On Facebook, Instagram In July

Social media giant Meta took action against 27.2 Mn content pieces on its Facebook and Instagram platforms in July, it said in its monthly compliance report for the month of July 2022.

Facebook accounted for the majority of the content pieces that were actioned, around 25 Mn. Of these, a majority of pieces were flagged for spam content (17.3 Mn), violent and graphic content (2.3 Mn) and content related to adult nudity and sexual activity (2.7 Mn).

Instagram took action against 2 Mn content pieces, of which the most were about suicide and self injury (909.2K), followed by content related to adult nudity and sexual activity (370.1K) and violent and graphic content (272.9 K).

Besides, the social media giant also took action on content related to other categories such as child endangerment, bullying and harassment, and hate speech on both the platforms.

The proactive action rate for Facebook and Instagram stood at above 90% during the month. It refers to the percentage of content flagged by the company before being reported by users.

Meta received 626 reports for Facebook through the Indian grievance mechanism in July, and responded to 100% of these 626 reports. Of these reports, it provided tools for users to resolve their issues in 603 cases. While the remaining 23 reports needed specialised review, and Meta reviewed the content as per its policies, according to the report.

For Instagram, Meta received 1,033 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism during the month. Of these, it provided tools for users to resolve their issues in 945 cases. Among the other 88 reports where specialised review was needed, Meta reviewed content as per its
policies, and took action on 35 of them in total.

In June, Meta took action against 22.8 Mn content pieces on Facebook and Instagram. Unsurprisingly, Facebook accounted for a majority of these content pieces at around 18.7 Mn.

Under the new IT Rules (Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021), significant social media intermediaries, platforms with more than 5 Mn users, are required to publish monthly compliance reports.
