OpenAI, the parent of generative AI chatbot ChatGPT, has made its Android app live. India is among the few countries where users can download and use the ChatGPT app from Google Play.

Besides India, the app is now available in countries like Bangladesh, Brazil, and the US.

Users in countries that are not part of this list, can preorder the app from Google Play. It is expected that more countries would be added to the list next week.

iOS users have been using the ChatGPT application across the globe for some time now. In India, the iOS app has been available since late May.

Besides ChatGPT, Sam Altman’s brainchild, OpenAI, also offers subscription-based GPT-4, a more powerful text-generating AI bot.

Launched in November last year, ChatGPT took the world by storm and immediately gained widespread acceptance among internet users.

Following this, tech giants such as Microsoft and Google also threw their hats in the ring. While Microsoft, which has been backing OpenAI since 2019, launched AI-powered  Bing Chat, Google launched Bard earlier this year.

With 759 Mn internet users, India is one of the biggest markets for OpenAI. Such has been the demand in the country that OpenAI said Indian users will now be able to access ChatGPT in multiple languages such as Hindi, Kannada, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Bengali, Punjabi, and Malayalam.

Meanwhile, a number of Indian startups have also integrated ChatGPT with their offerings. On Monday (July 24), OYO announced the launch of a ChatGPT-powered virtual front desk solution for its hotel partners in the UK to enable self-check-in. Earlier, ixigo also unveiled its ChatGPT-powered ‘intelligent’ trip planner, PLAN.

Meanwhile, Swiggy and Zomato are also experimenting with generative AI.

The latest development comes weeks after Altman met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his trip to India.
