Indian edtech applications Vedantu and BYJU’s rank in the top 10 list at No 8 and No 10 respectively, of most downloaded educational applications from the Google Play Store, a recent report by app analytics firm Sensor Tower revealed. Vedantu is also ranked at No 10 in the overall downloads category which doesn’t feature BYJU’s. However, both the apps don’t feature in the top 10 list of most downloaded educational apps from the iOS App Store.
Vedantu and BYJU’S majorly focus on the K12 and competitive exam preparation segments but have also entered the online coding lessons segment in recent times.
The report, which ranks the top educational applications worldwide in terms of downloads, found Google Classroom to be the most downloaded app in the Education category, for July 2020, with more than 14.8 million installs, 13.5 times its downloads in July 2019. Indonesia ranked number 1 in terms of country-wise downloads of Google Classroom, accounting for 40% of its worldwide downloads, while India ranked second at 20%.
While a host of Indian edtech applications such as Unacademy, upGrad and Toppr, among others, are missing from the list of most downloaded educational applications, India ranks as one of the foremost users of the most popular educational applications, which are listed in the report. YouTube Kids, ranked second in the list of educational apps with most overall downloads, saw most instals come from India, which accounted for 20.7% of its worldwide downloads, followed by Brazil at 10.6%.
Duolingo, Tips for File Transfer 2020, and Cake rounded off the top five most installed Education category apps worldwide for the month.
Indian Edtech Segment Sees Growth Amid Pandemic
Earlier this month, an Inc42 report highlighted how the Covid-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown restrictions, had seen overseas-based edtech applications also gain prominence and find takers in India, a prominent example being Skillshare, which counts India as its fastest-growing market, where it saw a 300% month-on-month growth from February to April this year.
Keeping the growing demand for its courses in India in mind, the company is also looking to work on creating localised content for the Indian users.
According to a recent study by Similar Web, based on 35 online learning platforms, the Indian edtech segment saw a 26% increase in user visits between April 2019 to March 2020, as compared to April 2018 – March 2019. Further, in the first 28 days of lockdown, the edtech segment saw 128.8 Mn visits (on average, 4.6Mn daily visits) as compared to 102.2 Mn average visits between April 2019 – February 2020.
According to the ‘Future Of India’s $2 Bn Edtech Opportunity Report 2020’, K-12 and test preparation combined will make 66% ($1.3 Bn) of the total online education market size in 2021. Skill development and online certification are expected to account for $463 Mn of the Indian edtech segment, growing at a CAGR of 38% from 2016-21.
