Amazon Doubles Export Target To $20 Bn From India By 2025 Via Its Global Selling Programme

Ecommerce major Amazon expects cumulative exports from its platform in India to reach $20 Bn by 2025 under its global selling programme, said Amit Agarwal, SVP India and emerging markets, Amazon. 

In January 2020, the ecommerce giant had set a target to facilitate cumulative exports worth $10 Bn from India by 2025 through its selling programme and Amazon would invest $1 Bn in digitising the small and medium businesses in India.

“We are excited by the remarkable growth that more than 1 Lakh exporters are witnessing through our global selling program. We will continue to work with all stakeholders to make exports easier for Indian MSMEs to help them create robust businesses,” added Agarwal while launching Amazon Exports Digest 2022.

The ecommerce major has said that cumulative exports by Indian exporters on its global selling programme will soon surpass the $5 Bn milestone, according to a press statement. 

The programme took about three years to enable $1 Bn, and $2 Bn has come in just 17 months, it said. 

Attending the event, Union Minister for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Narayan Rane, said, “Enhancing the export potential of Indian MSMEs is a key government priority and efforts are being made to support them in international markets. I would like to congratulate Amazon and all MSMEs for playing an important role in driving export-led growth to help realize the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”

Amazon launched the global selling programme in 2015, which has more than 1 Lakh exporters. These exporters are showcasing millions of ‘Made in India’ products to customers worldwide through its website in the US, the UK, UAE, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Netherlands, Turkey, Brazil, Japan, Australia, and Singapore.

“The government had set a target of achieving $400 Bn in annual merchandise exports and for the first time in history, India has breached this target. India’s merchandise exports touched a record $418 Bn in 2021-22. The government’s unwavering commitment towards exports has been very encouraging,” Agarwal said.

In 2021, many Indian entrepreneurs and businesses including Indo Tribe (Handicrafts), Mou Meraki (Leather Products), Aromafume (Ayurvedic Products), D’Moksha Homes (Home Décor) have emerged as globally successful brands.

Amazon India announced in March 2022 that more than 1 Lakh Indian exporters have joined its global selling platform to sell goods globally. The number of sellers has grown nearly 30% year-on-year since January 2020. 

A large number of sellers on the program come from non-metros and many of these businesses are first generation entrepreneurs and emerging brands.

These exporters are showcasing more than 140 Mn ‘Made in India’ products to Amazon customers in over 200 countries and territories across the world. 

Amazon directly competes with Flipkart, eBay, Walmart, Alibaba Group in the ecommerce segment. 

Meanwhile, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), six days ago conducted raids at offices of Amazon India’s two top sellers, Cloudtail and Appario, for alleged cases of a competition law violation. 

However, the exact nature of the alleged violation was not immediately clear. An email sent to Amazon on the issue did not elicit any response.

In addition, the antitrust body also raided a few seller offices of Amazon’s archrival Flipkart.
