Mobile internet services and WhatsApp (chat app) has been suspended in parts of Gujarat after the violent clashes between the Patel community and the police.

Instigated by politician Hardik Patel, a convener of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti who led a rally on demanding OBC status for the Patidar community for reservation in universities & government jobs, the violence broke out yesterday night. This resulted  a curfew in parts of Ahmedabad and other cities.

In order to control the situation and maintain security, internet services on mobile phones were suspended. Besides, Patel’s supporters sent all the videos and media announcements through whatsapp.

Patel’s WhatsApp message read “I make an appeal to maintain peace and keep calm. I give a call for Gujarat bandh tomorrow (Wednesday). This decision has been taken by Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti considering widespread violence in the state.” reported NDTV.

The huge turmoil was after Hardik’s brief detention. However, police has assured that the services will be resumed after the situation turns normal.
