Bangalore-based Spunklane Media Pvt. Ltd owned The News Minute (TNM), a startup that focuses on creating news content from southern India, has raised an undisclosed amount of angel funding from Quintillion Media.

With this development, Ritu Kapur, co-founder of Quintillion Media and Raghav Bahl, founder & former MD of Network 18, will join the company’s board.

Founded in 2014 by Chitra Subramaniam, Dhanya Rajendran and Vignesh Vellore, The News Minute, is a news and media digital platform bringing together the best of original content with a special focus on the five southern states – Andhra, Karataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. The platform hosts diverse content ranging from news reportage and breaking news to opinions and blogs with a special focus on the five Southern States.

Speaking on the development, Vignesh Vellore, co-founder of TNM said, “Our main focus is growing the audience. We have to develop a larger captive audience, increase our engagement with them on social platforms. We also aim to produce content which are qualitatively better and get better leverage out of our existing talents.”

The startup will use the raised capital to expand its team (mostly reporters) and enhance its technology as well as marketing in order to reach out to a wider audience.

Other players in this space who have raised funding include, Delhi-based startup, InShorts, (earlier News in Shorts) raised $20Mn, from existing investor Tiger Global; woman centric lifestyle and fashion content portal, POPxo, raised $2 Mn in its Series A round; and Internet media & news startup, ScoopWhoop Media, raised $4 Mn in a funding round from Kalaari Capital.
