Startup Village To Nurture 10K Campus Startups In The Second Phase

After the successful first phase of operations (2011-15), Startup Village in Kochi, is all set to align itself with the Centre’s ‘Startup India’ programme in the second phase in order to scale up activities pan-India.

Speaking on the development, Sanjay Vijaykumar, chairman of Startup Village said, “In Phase I, we succeeded in creating a seed entrepreneurial ecosystem in Kerala. In the next five years we plan to support 10,000 campus startup teams across the country, completely digitise the incubation process and launch a new business model.”

Startup Village, a PPP model technology business incubator, had signed an agreement with the Union Ministry for Science and Technology to incubate 50 startups by 2015; and has met its target. A detailed report on the successful completion of Phase I had been submitted to the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.

Vijayakumar, who set up MobME Wireless Solutions, one of India’s first campus startups, said the incubator has received over 7,000 applications. MobME will provide the initial investment of $600K (INR 4 Cr.) for scaling up the digital learning platform for the second phase of the Startup village.

It has already launched the beta version of the first of its kind online digital platform SV.CO, that provides online learning courses on launching new startups.

Looking at the success of Startup Village in Kochi, various other state governments including Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh had also announced plans to open Startup Village and other initiatives in their respective states.
