Gurugram-based test preparation app OnlineTyari (OT) has acquired Plix, a photo and video sharing platform.

OnlineTyari and Plix will integrate within the next couple of months. With this acquisition, OnlineTyari will now be 75 employees strong. It will use Plix’s skill in the field of machine learning and pattern recognition to augment adaptive learning and in creating a more personalised experience on its platform.

Vipin Agarwal, co-founder and CEO of OnlineTyari said, “The acquisition of Plix is strategic to our vision and mission. Our goal is to improve education and skill development for more than 100 Mn Indians, each year. With Plix, and the talent they bring to our team in the field of machine learning, image recognition and analytics, we will be able to deliver on multiple use cases for our users that will solve challenges around making the platform more intelligent and scalable. We look forward to working with and building greater value for our users with Apurv and his high energy team”.

Founded in 2015 by Apurv Chawla, Plix informs users which of their friends might have their photos, which they may not have shared in the past and can be used to easily request/share entire albums of photos and videos. Plix had earlier raised $500K from Instalabs, an apps incubator, according to an official statement.

On the other hand, OnlineTyari was founded in 2014 by Vipin Agarwal and Bhola Ram Meena, both graduates of IIT Kanpur. It offers students test preparation materials for entrance exams including Civil Services, Banking Services, UPSC, GATE, and State Government jobs.

It offers customised, curated, and vernacular test preparation content. The preparation materials include full mock tests and current affairs articles. According to a company statement, the app has seen more than 4 Mn downloads.

In November 2016, OnlineTyari raised an undisclosed Series A investment from Michael and Susan Dell Foundation and Contrarian Capital. It counts 500 Startups, Tracxn Labs, Globevestor, Vikram Chachra of Eight Capital, Mohandas Pai from 3one4 Capital, and Aloke Bajpai, co-founder and CEO of IxIgo, among its angel investors. Other startups in this segment are Avagmah, Meritnation, Simplilearn, Englishleap, Testbook etc.
