Hyderabad-based local commerce platform, Nukkad Shops, has raised $1 Mn (INR 6.7 Cr) in a funding round led by PurpleTalk Inc, a mobile solutions company.

Founded in September 2015 by Vivek Shukla, and Ravi Korukonda, Nukkad Shops, helps neighbourhood mom-and-pop retail stores take their businesses online.

Users can access their neighbourhood shops, within 2KM radius, through Nukkad Shops mobile app. The company claims to deliver goods in 30 minutes.

Vivek Shukla, co-founder and vice-president (delivery), Nukkad Shops, told BS “The neighbourhood grocery shops are often low-tech and pretty unorganised. Nukkad Shops aims to provide hi-tech weaponry to them to fight back against the well-funded megaliths that the mobile grocery giants are becoming.”

The Nukkad Shops’ retailers have a point-of-sales (POS)-based system – comprising of a 10-inch tablet,  an in-built thermal printer, barcode scanner and a cash drawer at the heart of the app, which is compatible with Android and iOS-based mobile devices. This also helps them digitise entire inventory and make it accessible for all their regular customers.

Nukkad Shops has just moved up from the beta phase and claims to be live in 180 grocery stores in and around Hyderabad. It boasts 20,000 users, with an average basket size being INR 250.

Vivek added that apart from delivering groceries from the nearby shops, Nukkad shops is also working on the idea to provide online bus ticket booking, and also leads generation to banks through the retailers. These would act as an alternative revenue stream for them.
