Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has invested an undisclosed amount in Bangalore-based healthcare startup HealthEminds.

The investment has been made through Uthappa’s fund Caffeine Ventures.

HealthEminds was founded in 2013 by Ankita Puri and Sunita Maheshwari. It is a psychiatry and psychology clinic that provides mental health therapy and wellness advice through video counseling, thus keeping the anonymity of a person.

Ankita Puri, co-founder and CEO of HealthEminds said that the company will use the funds to launch a new product, increase its reach across India, and expand its operations team.

According to WHO report 2010, India accounts for 32% of the world’s suicides, and it is the third largest cause of death among 15–35-year-olds. Also, studies done by the Government of India show that one in five Indians suffer from mental health disorders. Despite these alarming statistics, those facing mental and emotional disorders are stigmatized, leading to fewer people reaching out for help.

Apart from HeathEminds, there are startups like Ahmedabad-based OoWomaniya, Gurgaon-based ePsyclinic, Mumbai-based Type A Thought, and Bangalore-based YourDost.com, who are providing mental well-being and emotional support from psychologists, counsellors, sexologists and psychiatrists through digital platforms like chat, video conferencing or telephonic interaction.

Previously, Uthappa had invested in online tiffin service venture iTiffin. Apart from Uthappa, other ace cricketers like Yuvraj Singh, Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar have tested their hands in the startup community.
