Famed Khan Academy Launches Hindi Portal For India

Khan Academy, an US-based non-profit educational organization, has launched a Hindi portal for students in India. In the initial stage, the portal will cover syllabus of National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) for math.

With its coveted free online video courses, Khan Academy is aiming at disrupting the traditional model of tutoring in the country.

Hindi speaking students can now learn math through video lessons and practice sessions. The YouTube channel of the platform has already has over 3000 subscribers.

The company plans to have 3000 plus maths videos on the channel soon in addition to special focus on sciences stream later.

“After the US, Khan Academy sees India as a huge market but not to make profit. We shall provide customized and localized high-quality content in different languages”, said Sandeep Bapna, India Country Manager of Khan Academy.

Known for revolutionizing the way school children learn math and science in the US, the company is spearheaded by Salman Khan, a former hedge fund analyst, teacher and entrepreneur. Khan believes in free world-class education for anyone, anywhere at anytime across the world.

The website sees over 20 Mn visits on a monthly basis and 70% of its traffic comes from the USA. The video tutorials on the website has been used by many including Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft Corp.

Speaking to a certain section of the media, Khan said that , the portal ‘aspires to play the role that libraries for previous generations’. He revealed that the dream for Khan Academy is to be an ‘institution of the world’.

In India the company will rely on philanthropists for revenues, following the same model as in the US. Khan further went on to add that students often provide donations to the academy in small token amounts ($5/ $10).

Khan Academy in India is supported by Central Square Foundation (CSF), a venture philanthropy promoted by Ashish Dhawan, co-founder of ChrysCapital.
