In order to boost entrepreneurship in rural India, the government plans to launch Deen Dayal Upadhyay Swaniyojan Yojana on the lines of ‘Startup India, Standup India‘.

Under the initiative, the unemployed rural population of India will be able to fulfil their entrepreneurial dreams by exploring self-employment opportunities. The program is not aimed to provide placements but generate a means of livelihood through self-employment.

A senior government official told ET, that the scheme will provide basic skill sets required for self employment in various fields and thereafter they will be provided credit linkages and incubation centres, wherever needed.

The program is being designed by the rural development ministry and will be backed by the Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency (MUDRA Bank). It will provide training for skill sets pertaining to driving, plumbing, agriculture, dairy farming, grafting and horticulture among others.

The rural development ministry is said to be in talks with other government departments including textiles, animal husbandry and food processing to help the rural poor collaborate to set up businesses across various sectors. It is also planning to hold discussions with private entities and individuals working in the startup space to map entrepreneurship opportunities.

As per the Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) data of July 2015, one third of India’s rural households are landless and depend on manual labour for income, thus highlighting the need for skill development in these areas.
