The Commerce Ministry has launched a marketplace for online purchase of goods and services by various central government ministries and departments. The Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D) has developed the portal to bring in more transparency.
The online portal will offer various specifications of a product, and help government departments make online purchases. Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman cited examples, and said that if one wants a particular specification of a computer, then various brands are available at the portal with cost. She further added, “The prices are going to be there, it is for you to say how many units you want.”
As per reports, the online portal will be expanded by March next year to make it more comprehensive. The minister further added that there are many more things in the offering.
According to FICCI-KPMG report, ecommerce market in India may touch $100 Bn by 2020. This boom will happen because broadband will take over and digital network will spread into the rural areas. By 2017, India will have 350 Mn smartphones that will create more demand for the ecommerce industry. This online marketplace will hence help the government to aggregate demand that will lead to lower price, better choices and faster procurement.
