In one of his interviews, Jeff Bezos, founder, and CEO of Amazon.com, mentioned that there is a succession plan in place for him and for all of his senior executives.Yesterday, in a blog post, Bezos announced Jeff Wilke as the CEO of Worldwide Consumer, Andy Jassy as the CEO of Amazon Web Services and Jeff Bezos remains the CEO of the company.
Bezos said that this is not a reorganisation but rather a recognition of the roles they’ve played for a while.
The need for three CEOs has emerged from the fact that Amazon has become the fastest company ever to reach $100 Bn in annual sales and Amazon Web Services is reaching $10 Bn in annual sales. Hence, there was a need to make each of them a distinctive division under one roof.
In the post, Amazon wrote, “…as we’ve grown as a company and those three big pillars have also grown, we’ve decided, it makes sense to change the titles of the leaders of those businesses-Jeff Wilke and Andy Jassy-to CEO Worldwide Consumer and CEO Amazon Web Services.”
Jeff Wilke was earlier Senior Vice-president, Consumer Business at Amazon.com, while Andy Jassy was Senior Vice-president, Web Services. Both Wilke and Jassy have played critical roles in turning the company into a tech juggernaut worth about $300 Bn.
