Opposing the central government’s move of regularising sale of medicines through internet, All India Organisation of Chemists & Druggists (AIOCD) will go on a strike today.
According to a TOI report, about 8 lakh chemists across the country including 6,000 alone from Mumbai plan to protest against the online selling of medicines.
J S Shinde, president of AIOCD, said, “E-pharmacy is against the larger public interest. It will boost the sale of illegal and spurious drugs in the market, besides posing a huge threat of addiction among youngsters.”
The association believes that the country still does not have adequate measures to monitor online sale of medicines. Besides, online medicine commerce will also affect the livelihood of about 8 Mn people who survive on the retail chemist industry.
Most chemists are supposed to follow the one-day strike, barring those located on hospital premises.
