Affixing the logistics stump on the ecommerce battlefield, around 400 ecommerce retailers have tied up with Department of Posts (DoP) to deliver goods, even to the remotest of areas.

It is to be noted that DoP has a network of over 1.55 lakh post offices, of which 1.3 lakh are in rural areas.

According to the statement given by Kavery Banerjee, Secretary of Department of Posts, to a publication, “India Post is a natural partner for ecommerce companies because of our reach and network. We are looking at 100% year-on-year growth and by March, we will generate revenues of INR 250 Cr from parcels and speed post.”

An internal note of the communications and IT ministry said, “The Department has tied up with more than 400 ecommerce agencies, including Flipkart, Amazon, YepMe, Snapdeal etc, for delivering ecommerce prepaid as well as cash-on-delivery (CoD) orders.”

The note also mentioned that DoP is currently delivering 40,000 ecommerce parcels per day, and the average value of parcels handled by India Post is INR 5,000 for urban areas and INR 3,000 for rural areas. However, it receives INR 1,150 Cr value of parcels under the CoD category, which is expected to cross the INR 1,500 Cr mark by the end of the current fiscal.

The DoP recognises that out of all ecommerce retailers, Amazon is India Post’s biggest partner in terms of business.
