Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp faced a widespread outage today (November 25)  for several users in India.

As per Downdetector, a crowd-sourced platform for tracking outages, users across India started reporting the issue from 7 AM. The outage peaked at 10:49 AM with more than 30 complaints on the site.

The data further said that more than 50% users faced issues with the website, 33% faced difficulty accessing the app and 10% reported server issues.

Users across metropolitan cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh saw a major hit.

Some users posted about the outage on their X handles. “Am I the only one experiencing Whatsapp web problems or is it down globally?” one of the users posted.

“ It’s (WhatsApp Web) failed to load since this morning,” said another user via his X handle.

Meta is yet to give a statement regarding the reasons which caused the outage.

This comes a few days after Meta-owned Instagram faced a widespread outage with more than 700 affected users in India.

The social media platform has been facing frequent outages lately. For instance, last month Instagram was down for several users in India, where over 64% of users experienced problems logging into the app and 24% faced server connectivity issues.

Earlier this year, Instagram and WhatsApp were down for several hours, causing disruptions for local businesses.

It is pertinent to note that, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) recently fined a sum of INR 213.14 Cr on Meta for abusing its dominant position. The penalty pertains to WhatsApp’s 2021 privacy policy case.

In August, WhatsApp banned over 84.58 Lakh Indian accounts according to its monthly transparency report, citing violations of its terms of service, grievances from local users and orders received from the grievance appellate committee (GAC).
