Elon Musk-led social media giant Twitter has reportedly shut down two out of three offices in India and asked its staff to work from home.
The move is in line with the company’s objectives of optimising costs and achieving profitability again. Twitter has closed its Delhi and Mumbai offices, while its Bengaluru office that mainly houses engineers will continue to operate, sources told Bloomberg.
It is prudent to note Inc42 first reported Twitter’s decision to wind up its offices in India, in November 2022, and operate a small control centre in the country.
The recent development comes a week after the micro-blogging platform introduced its premium subscription service viz Twitter Blue for users in India. The service is available on iOS and Android devices, and also available for web users.
The subscription fee for Twitter Blue services for iOS and Android users in India is INR 900 per month. While, for web users, the subscription fee will be INR 650 per month.

Meanwhile, last year, after taking over Twitter for $44 Mn, Musk fired about 210 employees in India in a bid to trim expenses of the unprofitable company.
According to its former employees, Twitter India’s vertical Twitter Communications India slipped into losses for the first time in the last five years. In the financial year 2021-22, the vertical posted a loss of INR 31.84 Cr while, in FY21, it posted a profit of INR 7.76 Cr.
In FY22, its operating revenue grew by 81% to INR 156.75 Cr from INR 86.36 C recorded in FY21.
Earlier, Israel-based cybersecurity firm Hudson Rock reported that a major data breach occurred on Twitter, compromising data of more than 40 Cr Twitter accounts across the globe.
Further, between April 2021 and December 2022, Twitter accounted for 9% of the 2,767 influencer complaints, as per the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI). However, the influencer complaints regarding the micro-blogging platform reduced to 3% in the subsequent nine months.
