The microblogging site Twitter has finally rolled out its premium subscription service, Twitter Blue, for users in India.
The company has made Twitter Blue available on both iOS and Android devices, as well as for web users. The monthly subscription fee for iOS and Android users in India is INR 900 per month, while the pricing has been kept lower at INR 650 per month for the web.
On the other hand, users can also subscribe to the premium service on the website for an annual fee of INR 6,800.
Twitter Blue is an opt-in, paid subscription that adds a blue checkmark to the user account and offers early access to select features, like Edit Tweet. Twitter Blue users will also be able to post videos of longer duration, their feeds will have 50% lesser advertisements, and they will also get early access to new features.
Until now, Twitter used the blue checkmark to indicate active, notable, and authentic accounts of public interest that Twitter had independently verified based on certain requirements.
However, the blue checkmark may mean two different things now: either that an account was verified under the previous verification criteria (active and authentic), or that the account has an active subscription to Twitter Blue.
New subscriptions to Twitter Blue are currently available in 15 countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the UK, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, India, Indonesia, and Brazil.
To opt for the subscription service, new Twitter users will have to wait for 90 days to subscribe to the service. “We may also impose waiting periods for new accounts in the future at our discretion, and without notice,” the company said.
India is the third-largest market in the world for Twitter, after the US and Japan. Twitter Blue’s rollout might work as another revenue stream for the microblogging site. In India, Twitter has about 23.6 Mn users, according to Staista.
After tech billionaire Elon Musk acquired Twitter last year for $44 Bn last year, he rewrote the rules of Twitter, and the subscription service being one of the major changes.
