Teachmint’s cofounder and CTO Anshuman Kumar quit the edtech startup last month to focus on his new venture Duolop.
Kumar made the announcement in a LinkedIn post on Friday (April 7). “I am stepping into a new role as the founder of Duolop, a dynamic and innovative Indian app revolutionising how couples connect and grow together,” he said.
Teachmint, founded in 2020 by Kumar, along with Mihir Gupta, Payoj Jain, and Divyansh Bordia, helps teachers and schools digitise their classrooms. The startup is backed by marquee investors such as Lightspeed India, Rocketship.vc, and Better Capital.
Talking to Inc42 about his exit, Kumar said, “Last month I left Teachmint because right now I am looking to build a platform which is more technically aligned with my vision.”
Duolop is an app for couples, both married and unmarried, which aims to simplify the complexities of managing a relationship, Kumar said. It offers a private chat feature where couples can send messages, images and videos to each other, and also helps them plan dates.
The app has already been launched on the Google Play Store and will soon be available on the Apple Store as well.
“We have hired tenured leadership to lead the engineering function to continue building a deep platform for the education ecosystem. Anshuman has played an instrumental role in building the foundation of our scalable tech stack. While Anshuman moves out of the CTO role, he will continue guiding the engineering team at Teachmint,” said a Teachmint spokesperson in a statement.
Kumar’s exit comes at a time when Teachmint, like many other edtech startups, is struggling to scale up business amid mounting losses. It recently pivoted from B2C to B2B business model. The startup, which began its journey with an app that enabled tutors to digitise their classrooms, has now started offering software to help digitise schools.
As per a report, it also discontinued its course-selling offering Teachmore, which it acquired in 2021, last year.
In November last year, Teachmint laid off 45 employees, or around 5% of its total workforce, in a business restructuring exercise. The startup’s net loss skyrocketed 24X to INR 131.70 Cr in FY22 from INR 5.52 Cr in FY21, while its operating revenue stood at INR 77.45 Lakh.
Kumar’s exit also comes at a time when a lot of Indian tech startups have seen their top executives quit in recent times. While Zomato cofounder Mohit Gupta resigned last year, it’s cofounder and CTO Gunjan Patidar quit in January this year. Beauty ecommerce platform Nykaa also saw five of its senior executives quitting last month, a year after CFO Arvind Agarwal’s resignation. Most recently, Swiggy’s CTO Dale Vaz stepped down from the position.
