SUMMARY

The pact will focus on semiconductor chip packaging and manufacturing at Tata Electronics’ planned facilities in Assam and Gujarat

The collaboration also includes plans to explore opportunities in electronic manufacturing services, especially in vehicle electronics

Both the companies will also consider local projects that can bolster their footprint in automotive electronics

Tata Electronics and German engineering giant Robert Bosch GmbH have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together in the electronics and semiconductor sectors.

The pact will focus on semiconductor chip packaging and manufacturing at Tata Electronics’ planned facilities in Assam and Gujarat. While the Assam unit will handle assembly and testing, the Gujarat unit will operate as a foundry.

The collaboration also includes plans to explore opportunities in electronic manufacturing services, especially in vehicle electronics.

The MoU aims to support Bosch in building a stable supply chain for its technology products while contributing to the growth of India’s semiconductor and electronics manufacturing capabilities.

Both the companies will also consider local projects that can bolster their footprint in automotive electronics.

However, the companies have not disclosed further details on investment size or project timelines.

“This partnership is well-aligned with our commitment to help create a holistic semiconductor and electronics ecosystem in India, with offerings that resonate with customers around the world,” said Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD of Tata Electronics.

Meanwhile, the Tata Group-owned electronics manufacturer has been actively expanding its presence in the semiconductor sector through strategic partnerships with global companies.

Over a month ago, Tata Electronics was in talks with global semiconductor players X-Fab, DNeX and Globetronics to acquire fabrication or outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Malaysia.

Prior to that the electronics giant has been in discussions to onboard semiconductor design major NXP Semiconductors in May, to manufacture NXP’s offerings in its upcoming semiconductor fab plant in Gujarat and OSAT facility in Assam.

Further, Tata Electronics has also partnered with US-based semiconductor manufacturing company Analog Devices, and signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturers Himax Technologies and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), earlier this year.

Tata Electronic’s push towards its expansion in semiconductor manufacturing comes at a time when the government is taking various measures to boost India’s semiconductor landscape.

Nearly two months ago, IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled two new state-of-the-art design facilities in Noida and Bengaluru, aimed at expanding end-to-end semiconductor capabilities from architecture to testing in India.

The Indian semiconductor market is projected to become a $150 Bn opportunity by 2030, according to an Inc42 report on semiconductor startups.
