Listed foodtech major Swiggy has launched a new campaign ‘Swiggy Serves’ in an effort to reduce food wastage across its value chain.

Swiggy plans to redistribute surplus food from its restaurant partners to underserved communities, a move aimed at addressing hunger across the country, the company said in a statement.

The Sriharsha Majety-led company has joined hands with Delhi NCR-based non-profit Robin Hood Army for the Swiggy Serves initiative. It aims to provide 50 Mn meals to underserved communities by the end of 2030.

Through the pilot of the newly launched campaign, the duo has already redistributed 2,000 meals across 33 cities with participation from more than 126 restaurant partners.

“Currently, we are live in 33 cities and we plan to take this initiative to more cities,” said Rohit Kapoor, CEO of Swiggy’s food marketplace.

Swiggy added that several renowned brands such as Birayni By Kilo, Dana Choga, Vardhas, B.Tech Momos Wala, Samosa Singh, Babai Tiffins, Dosa Anna, Urban Tandoor, among others, have signed up for the new initiative.

It is pertinent to mention that Swiggy’s rival Zomato launched a similar initiative in 2019, in collaboration with non-profit Feeding India, to reduce hunger, malnutrition and food wastage. The same year, the Deepinder Goyal-led foodtech company also acquired Feeding India.

The Swiggy Serves initiative comes at a time when the foodtech major is shifting from its unified app approach to rolling out separate apps for its offerings under the brand.

Inc42 reported earlier today that Swiggy has expanded its quick commerce service Instamart to 76 cities across India. The company is also planning to launch a standalone app for Instamart soon.

Swiggy Instamart’s operating revenue surged 135.7% to INR 490 Cr in the quarter ended September 2024 (Q2 FY25) from INR 208 Cr in the year-ago period.

Earlier this week, Swiggy also launched a 15-minute food delivery app ‘SNACC’ and services marketplace app for professionals to list their services called ‘Pyng Professional’.

Shares of Swiggy ended Thursday’s trading session 3.45% higher at INR 507.60 apiece on the BSE.
