In a bizarre incident, a Swiggy Genie delivery executive allegedly disappeared with a customer’s Apple Watch Ultra, worth INR 82,999, in Bengaluru.
The incident came to light after a user tweeted that a Swiggy Genie picked up an Apple Watch Ultra, belonging to a friend, from his possession. After the executive allegedly collected the bag containing the smartwatch, he is said to have cancelled the order, severed all communication channels and decamped with the product.
“… Friend forgot his Apple Watch ultra, he sent genie, genie collects the bag, cancels the order, blocks both of us, and we chase the guy at 2 am with a Rapido guy helping us,” tweeted the victim.
The incident has raised concerns regarding the safety and security of products in transit on the foodtech platform’s delivery service. Many users in the comments also flagged similar instances, raising questions around the screening procedures employed by the company while onboarding drivers.
However, the smartwatch was eventually tracked by the duo. According to an India Today report, the two friends eventually recovered the item with the help of the watch’s location tracking feature. As per the tweet, they followed the delivery executive at 2 am and located the erring driver at a Swiggy warehouse.
The two are said to have caught hold of the executive and recovered the smartwatch from his possession.
Meanwhile, there has been no official comment from Swiggy on the matter. Inc42 has reached out to the company, and the article will be updated accordingly.
Meanwhile, the friend of the smartwatch’s owner has alleged that the foodtech major instructed them to send an email when they raised the matter with the company. There is no clarity on whether the victim has filed a police complaint.
This is not the first time that a Swiggy delivery executive has been involved in a similar case. In February, a Swiggy delivery person was caught on CCTV camera stealing a woman’s smartphone from an apartment in Mumbai.
In March last year, another Swiggy driver was caught stealing a mobile phone while collecting an order from a restaurant in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur. In 2021, two persons working as Swiggy delivery executives were arrested in Noida in connection with multiple thefts and house breaks in Noida.
