Indian social media platform ShareChat has actioned against 5.2 Mn content pieces (5,261,903) in the month of September, as per its monthly compliance report mandated under the IT rules.

Of this, ShareChat took down 4.3 Mn content pieces under the ‘user generated content (UGC)’ for breaching the community standards while 224K pieces and 46K pieces were taken down under the ‘sexally explicit’ category and ‘comments’ category respectively.

Besides, ShareChat took down 51K and 452 content pieces pertaining to copyright infringement and Chatrooms issues.

During the same timeframe, ShareChat received about 4 Mn (4,688,505) user complaints. Of this, it logged the highest number of user complaints (1.2 Mn) in ‘Others’ category, followed by reports related to abusive language (1.1 Mn) and fake profile (145K), among others.

The compliance report also stated that the social media platform received six complaints from Indian law enforcement authorities and investigating agencies in September. 

Of this, ShareChat processed five reports where user data was provided by the said authorities. Meanwhile, it did not take down any of these reported accounts since they did not seem to breach the platform’s community guidelines.  

In its report, the homegrown social media platform informed that it permanently terminated 2,497 user accounts for a period of 360 days. In addition, it enforced UGC bans on 3,912 accounts thus, not allowing these users to post content on the platform for 360 days.

It further imposed 3,057 edit profile bans and 2,526 comment bans. The former ban would not permit users to edit their profiles while the latter would restrict users from commenting on any post on the platform for 360 days.

In contrast to its latest report, ShareChat reported about 5 Mn user complaints via its Indian grievance redressal mechanisms in the month of August. 

Talking about Google’s latest compliance report, the tech colossal took action against 647,177 content pieces/URLs in India in the month of September. Of this, it removed nearly 547K content pieces to cease the dissemination of inappropriate contents. 

Google’s report added that the company received about 30K complaints from individual users in the country relating to copyright infringement, trademark, counterfeit and impersonation issues, among others. 

Moreover, during the same time period, Meta’s messaging platform WhatsApp banned over 2.6 Mn user accounts as per its monthly compliance report. 

WhatsApp’s compliance report stated that about 1.8 Mn accounts bans occurred pertaining to user complaints and the remaining 8.72 Lakh blocked for violating community guidelines.
