Reddit Back Online After A Global Outage

Social media platform Reddit was restored on Monday (October 14) evening after a global outage which affected thousands of users, including in India, for hours across the world. 

During the outage, the users were unable to access the platform both on laptop and mobile devices. They faced messages such as “no healthy upstream” and “upstream connect error or disconnect/reset before headers” during the downtime. 

This marks the third outage on the platform in the last three months. It faced similar outages in September and August this year. 

According to Downdetector, reports of outages started at around 9 AM and continued till 4 PM. Notably, 72% of the users flagged issues with Reddit’s website and 26% raised issues with server connection. These reports peaked at 11 am and later at 12:30 PM. 

In India, users from across the country, including cities like Chandigarh, Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, and Jaipur, among others, reported outages. 

Reddit’s status page acknowledged that a fix was underway, saying, “Investigating – We are currently experiencing a performance degradation of our service. We are working to fix the problem.”

Many of the users took to X to complain about the outage. 

In recent times, a number of global platforms have witnessed outages. For instance, OpenAI’s conversational AI chatbot ChatGPT experienced a “partial outage” last month that impacted users worldwide. 

Before that, Microsoft faced downtime due to configuration changes that affected connectivity to the backend services. Various industries, including airlines and brokerages, among others, were hit by the outage.
