PM Modi Meets Foxconn Chief, Discusses Manufacturer’s India Investment Plans

SUMMARY

PM Narendra Modi and Foxconn chairman Young Liu discussed the company’s investment plans in states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh

Senior Mizoram official, Jonathan Lalremruata, also met Liu in New Delhi to discuss potential investments in the state

Liu is also expected to meet Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and state industries minister MB Patil on August 16

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on Wednesday (August 14) met Foxconn CEO and chairman Young Liu to discuss the electronics manufacturer’s investment plans in India.

“Wonderful to meet Mr. Young Liu, the Chairman of Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn). I highlighted the wonderful opportunities India offers in futuristic sectors. We also had excellent discussions on their investment plans in India in states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh,” said PM Modi on X.

Besides, senior Mizoram official, Jonathan Lalremruata, also met Liu in New Delhi to discuss potential investments in the state.

Meanwhile, sources told Moneycontrol that Liu’s next stop in India will be Karnataka on August 16. He is slated to meet Karnataka’s chief minister (CM) Siddaramaiah and Karnataka’s minister for large and medium industries MB Patil.

The visit comes at a time when Foxconn’s is looking to expand manufacturing in India. While Foxconn currently assembles Apple iPhones in the country, it is reportedly looking to set up assembly infrastructure for iPads at its Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur facility.

It was previously also said to be mulling manufacturing artificial intelligence (AI) servers at its facilities in India.

In September last year, Foxconn’s India representative V Lee said that the company was planning to double its investments and business size in India in a year.

The meeting with PM Modi also comes two months after a report said that Foxconn has been following discriminatory hiring practices and excluding married women from jobs at its iPhone assembly facility in India.

Afterwards, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notices to the central labour ministry and the state government, seeking a detailed report in the case. Officials from the labour department visited Foxconn’s factory in July. There have been no further updates on the case since then.
