The government backed ecommerce platform aims aggressively to take over the likes of Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, and Zomato

ONDC aims to reach 900 Mn buyers and 1.2 Mn sellers in two years

On Sunday, ONDC daily retail orders crossed the 35,000 mark, with Delhi-NCR and  Bengaluru contributing more than 11,000 and 7,000 orders, respectively.

Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune registered 2,500-3,000 each, including food and grocery items, a Moneycontrol report said, quoting sources.

At a recent event, ONDC’s CEO T Koshy said that the government-backed ecommerce network is preparing to hit 2,00,000 transactions a day by the end of this year.

ONDC had touched 10,000 orders in May, with Bengaluru accounting for 40% of the orders. In addition, metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata are contributing the same share cumulatively.

The government-backed ecommerce platform aims aggressively to take over the likes of Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, and Zomato.

ONDC aims to reach 900 Mn buyers and onboard 1.2 Mn sellers in two years.

However, the network experienced a slowdown in its growth rate once it surpassed 25,000 orders in the second week of May. This coincided with a reduction in customer discounts and incentives provided to network participants. Earlier, the consumers were offered discounts on three orders a day which has been revised to 30 orders, overall.

Though the effectiveness of the current business model is not clear in the long run, ONDC is planning to cover more Indian cities. Earlier this month, the platform went live in five more cities – Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.

Additionally, PhonePe has also expanded its ONDC native ecommerce platform Pincode has expanded operations to cover more cities in Mumbai, Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, and Kolkata.

And, to support ONDC’s growth plans, Google has also announced an accelerator programme for the platform, said Ambarish Kenghe, vice president of Google Pay at a developer conference in June. This will allow businesses on ONDC to access Google Cloud’s technology and expert guidance and enable smooth digital commerce experiences.
