Several Indian apps like MX Player, Zomato, Swiggy, Flipkart, Meesho, and PhonePe were among the most downloaded apps in the world in 2022, according to a recent report by analytics firm Data.ai, formerly known as App Annie.

Times Internet-owned video-streaming platform MX Player was the third most downloaded video-streaming app in the world, according to Data.ai’s ‘State of Mobile 2023’ report. MX Player was behind only YouTube and Netflix in the global video streaming market in 2022.

Further, MX Player was the most downloaded video streaming app in India, ahead of JioTV, JioCinema, Voot, Sony LIV and others. At the same time, the app became the fifth most downloaded entertainment app of the last 10 years, reaching more than 1 Bn downloads.

Among the finance apps, PhonePe and Paytm were the most downloaded Indian apps in 2022, with Bajaj Finserv and YONO SBI also making it to the list of top 10 downloaded apps globally.

Meesho, Flipkart and Tata Neu became the top five breakout online shopping apps in terms of downloads across the world. In terms of monthly average users (MAU), Meesho was the top app worldwide in 2022, with only Flipkart in the top 10.

The food and drinks segment also saw Indian apps making it to the list of top downloaded apps. While Zomato was the most downloaded app in the category in the world, Swiggy was also in the top 10.

In terms of sports apps, Dream11 was the most downloaded in the world, with Cricbuzz among the top three.

However, no Indian apps or companies made it to the top 10 at the global level in terms of downloads or revenue.

The list was dominated by US and Chinese apps. However, in India, Reliance Industries, Meesho, Times Group, ShareChat and Bharti Airtel were the top app companies in terms of downloads, while none of the Indian companies was in the top 10 in terms of revenue.

The report from Data.ai comes as India’s app economy has become a driver for innovation across the startup ecosystem and the overall digital economy.

According to Inc42’s ‘Indian Tech Startup Funding Report 2022’, India is set to have more than 1.3 Bn internet users by 2030, with Indians spending 4.7 hours per day per user on mobile. Therefore, the number of Indian apps at the top of global charts can only be expected to rise in the coming years.
