With its aim to keep a close track on the attendance records of employees, Government of India has launched Aadhaar-based biometric attendance systems. The new portal, Attendance.gov.in will allow one to track the work of Central Government employees.

Organizations would require to register on the website. As the website reads, “A back-end administrator will check the details of the organisation submitted and make the organisation active by assigning it a unique sub-domain which will be the first name of the website.”

It’s essential for an employee to have a Aadhaar for registering on BAS from which their Attendance IDs will be generated. The 6 digit number will be generated based on the last 6 or first 6 digits of the person’s Aadhaar number. The attendance ID will only be active when the employee’s Aadhaar information has been verified by UIDAI and activated by the Nodal officer.

The employees will be required to enter their 6-digit Attendance ID on the terminal, the system will then ask for finger print verification. The staff will be able to mark attendance in any bio-metric terminal installed in various Central Government buildings.

There are over with over 1,816 biometric attendance devices being operational in various central government offices. There are around 43,000 registered users (employees), out of which 18,262 are Aadhaar verified.

The online biometric attendance system is already available online, with nearly 50,000 employees attendance across 147 government organisations including the Cabinet Secretariat, and other government bodies like the Central Vigilance Commission and the Planning Commission.

The website will provide an individual to check the attendance activity over time. Adding on one can even check the number of active devices.

For instance, at the time of writing this article there are over 23559 present today and over 2022 devices are active.

With this, other details including the name of the employee, designation, division and the exact time the employee arrived etc. can also be viewed.  The website also provides an option to download the data in form Excel sheet as well.

While trying it on mobile we found the interface as neat as it’s on the website.

As the network connectivity is essential for marking attendance, the government is also planning two types of connectivity with each attendance terminal; wi-fi on NICNET/broadband and SIM based GSM connectivity on tablets.

Jharkhand government and the Department of Electronics and Information Technology already have their attendance websites from which this initiative appears to be inspired from.

Well, big cheers to the government for coming up with this level of transparency.

Check out the website, and let us know what do you think about this initiative in the comments below.
