MG Motors India, Tata Power Join Hands To Install Superfast EV Chargers

In a bid to increase the adoption of electric vehicles (EV), automobile manufacturer MG Motor India, on Monday (June 8), announced its partnership with Tata Power to set up superfast chargers for electric vehicles (EV).

In this partnership, Tata Motors will install superfast chargers for EVs at select MG dealerships to offer end-to-end charging solutions to its dealers across India. These chargers, which will have a capacity of 50 KW, accessible by both MG ZS EV customers and other EV owners with CCS/CHAdeMO charging standards.

This association between MG Motor India and Tata Power is aimed to pay a specific focus towards key target cities and will be aligned towards expanding the companies plans.

Praveer Sinha, CEO and managing director of Tata Power said the partnership will also work on the second life of the battery usage in the future. “We aim to provide customers with a seamless charging experience. We are confident that this partnership with MG Motor will further boost our country’s ability to adapt the electrified range of vehicles that MG Motor has to offer,” he added.

As of now, MG Motor India has in place 10 such chargers across five cities — Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The company is also planning to expand its chargers network to other cities.

Meanwhile, Tata Power, under its EZ Charge brand, is setting up an elaborate EV charging ecosystem by installing more than 180 charging stations in 19 different cities.

EESL To Set Up 10K Charging Stations

Besides private players, government-owned companies are also bolstering the EV infrastructure. State-run Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) has announced that it is planning to install around 10K electric vehicles (EV) charging stations across India in the next two to three years.

Currently, EESL is aiming to install around 2,000 charging stations across the country by the financial year 2021 which will end on March 31, 2021.

In the last two months, mobility has taken a massive hit due to the lockdown. EESL noted that the current lockdown had slowed down the progress. However, the company is confident of reaching its targets as work is returning to normalcy.

Saurabh Kumar, managing director, Energy Efficiency Services Limited said that the company has resolved supply-side constraints. “We have exceeded our target of EV charging stations for FY20. Now we have over 300 such charging stations across the country. Our installation plans have not slowed down. In fact, this year (FY21) we have set a target of 2,000 charging stations. With the supply side back on track, we will be able to achieve this target,” he was quoted as saying by Time Now.

Besides this, EESL has a partnership with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation to set up EV charging infrastructure across the country. Last year, EESL also inaugurated the first electric vehicle public charging station in South Delhi, in partnership with South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). The charging station was installed near the SDMC market area of Greater Kailash.
