Social media giant Meta took action against 30.1 Mn content pieces on its Facebook and Instagram platforms in the month of May 2023, according to its monthly compliance report. 

A breakdown of the data revealed that Meta actioned more than 24.26 Mn content prices on Facebook. A majority of these were flagged for spam and adult nudity and sexual activity. While it took on action on 18.3 Mn spam pieces, adult nudity and sexual activity accounted for 3.2 Mn pieces.

The proactive action rate for Facebook and Instagram stood at above 90% during the month. It refers to the percentage of content flagged by the company before being reported by users.

The number of complaints received by Facebook through its India grievance mechanism more than doubled to 16,995 in May from April.

In total, Facebook received 16,995 grievances from users and provided tools for issue resolution in 2,325 cases. Regarding the remaining 14,670 reports that required specialized review, Meta reviewed the content in accordance with its policies and took action on 2,299 reports.

Meanwhile, Meta took action on 5.84 Mn content pieces on Instagram during the month.

The platform received 16,267 grievances from users and provided tools for issue resolution in 3,828 cases. Regarding the remaining 12,439 reports that required specialized reviews, Meta took action on 2,671 reports in total. 

Under the new IT Rules (Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021), significant social media intermediaries, platforms with more than 5 Mn users, are required to publish monthly compliance reports.

Meta-owned WhatsApp banned 6.5 Mn Indian accounts in May, as per its compliance report, while Twitter banned over 1.1 Mn accounts between April 26 and May 25, 2023.
