Facebook took action against 18.7 Mn content pieces, majority of them for being spam and for content related to violence

Social media group Meta on Monday (August 1) released its monthly compliance report for the month of June 2022. In total, the tech giant took action against 22.8 Mn content pieces on its Facebook and Instagram platforms in the month.
Facebook accounted for a majority of these content pieces at around 18.7 Mn. Most of the content pieces actioned on Facebook were tagged as ‘Spam’ (9.9 Mn), followed by content related to violence (3.9 Mn), adult nudity (2.5 Mn), suicide and self-injury (601K).
Action was also taken on content related to child endangerment (470.9K), terrorism (445.7K), online harrasment (288.8K), among others.
According to the tech giant, its proactive action rate on Facebook stood between 80% and 100%. Proactive action rate is the percentage of content flagged by the company before being reported by users.
Facebook received 564 complaints via its local grievance system in the month of June 2022. A majority of the issues related to social media accounts being hacked (157), followed by complaints clubbed under ‘Other issues’ (133).
Of the 564 grievances, Facebook provided tools for resolution in 504 cases. In the rest of the 60 reports, specialised review was needed. Under this, action was taken on 35 reports and no action was initiated against the remaining 25 grievances.
The compliance report also said that Instagram took action against 4.1 Mn pieces of action in June 2022. Of these, a majority were related to violent and graphic content (1.5 Mn), followed by suicide and self-injury (1.2 Mn).
Action was also taken against content related to adult nudity (619.5K), bullying and online harassment (297.7K), terrorism (197.6K), among other policy areas.
Proactive action rate hovered anywhere between 70% and 100% on Instagram.
Instagram also logged in 4,676 complaints in India and claimed to have responded to all of them. More than 89% or 4,185 complaints were registered for social media identity theft. Rest of the complaints related to accounts being hacked (173), grievances clubbed under ‘Other Issues’ (133), among others.
Of these, it provided tools for resolution of 2,811 reports, while specialised review was needed for 1,865 reports. 723 reports were reviewed out of the 1,865 complaints and no action was taken, while 1,142 grievances were actioned by Instagram in June 2022.
In its last compliance report for the month of May 2022, Meta had reported that it took action against 21.6 Mn content pieces on its Facebook and Instagram platforms.
In its latest compliance report, microblogging platform Twitter said that it banned 43,140 accounts for content related to child sexual exploitation and promotion of terrorism.
All social media platforms with more than 5 Mn users are mandated under the new IT Rules (Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021) to publish monthly compliance reports.
