US-based early-stage accelerator Y Combinator is currently holding the demo day for its first-ever completely virtual programme for the summer batch of 2020. This three-month-long accelerator programme had shortlisted nearly 197 startups across the world, of which 14 belong to India.

Earlier this year, Y Combinator had shortlisted 240 startups to be a part of its winter batch for 2020, of which 24 were Indian startups. These 24 startups included Able Jobs, DeepSource, Loop Health, UrbanKisaan and others. The latest batch is almost as small as Summer Batch of 2019, which too had 14 Indian startups.

Till now, all Y Combinator accelerator programmes have been held in-person. Even, the winter batch of 2020 was largely hosted in the US but had to transform its demo day into a virtual event. The current batch was completely virtual.

Talking to Inc42, Eatable cofounder Mainak Sarkar, who is a part of the Summer Batch, highlighted that the experience was different and was organised well. He highlighted that the virtual event gave them the time to focus on their business while attending the programme as well. Besides this, entrepreneurs from previous batches had to fund their stay in the US themselves. The current batch was able to get past that expense and the YC-Fund can now completely be diverted to their business.

Till date, Y Combinator has invested in multiple Indian startups including, ClearTax, RazorPay, Meesho, Observe.AI, Supr Daily, Drivezy, CureSkin, Innov8, Kisan Network, DocTalk, GoLorry, RedCarpetUp, Cashfree, Groww, Leena AI, Kyte.ai, Ziffy Homes and Prodigal Technologies. The applications for the winter batch of 2021 are open. The programme may be fully or partially remote, depending on the Covid-19 pandemic.
