After recently establishing a smart television manufacturing unit in India, the Korea-based technology giant Samsung has now decided to make smartphone displays in the country.

According to the Ministry of Corporate filings accessed by Inc42, the company has invested around INR 3,500 Cr in Samsung Display Noida Pvt Ltd. The investment is in the form of a three-year loan.

Further, Samsung has said that the newly established facility will manufacture, assemble, process, and sell displays for all types and sizes of electronic devices. In addition, the company has also said that it will manufacture parts, components, and other accessories related to display at the new manufacturing unit.

A source close to the development told ET that although Samsung has planned to manufacture smartphone displays in the initial phases, the company is also looking to build displays for laptops and televisions. The source further added that the first phase of this unit is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Besides using self-manufactured displays in its own smartphones, Samsung also sells these screens to other mobile makers such as Apple. With this new unit, the Korea-based company would be looking to increase its dominance in the smartphone screen manufacturing space.

Recently, Samsung has started its smartphone manufacturing hub in India. Notably, display panels are one of the costliest parts involved in smartphone and television manufacturing and with its production in India, the company will be able to save the losses incurred in shipping and other taxes.

Inc42 has reached out to Samsung for further clarification on its plans and the story will be updated once and then the company responds.

Make In India Smart Televisions

Besides smartphones, Samsung has recently started to manufacture smart televisions in India. Samsung, on January 3, entered into a partnership with the contract-based equipment manufacturer, Dixon Technologies, to restart the manufacturing of smart television units in the country.

In India’s television market, Samsung competes against Sony, LG and more affordable smart television brands such as Xiaomi, Vu, Micromax, Intex, Motorola, OnePlus and Nokia. With the manufacturing unit in India, Samsung is expected to reduce the prices of smart televisions in the country.
