Major Fire Disrupts Operations At Tata’s iPhone Facility In TN

SUMMARY

Tata Electronics said in a statement that the company is investigating the cause of the fire and will take necessary measures to ensure the safety of employees and stakeholders.

While no casualties were reported, it remains unclear how much the incident will impact operations at the facility, which was set to start manufacturing complete smartphones soon.

The latest update comes as Tata Electronics was gearing up to hire more than 20,000 workers at its Hosur plant.

A major fire broke out at Tata Electronics’ iPhone plant in Tamil Nadu’s Hosur during wee hours today (September 28), temporarily disrupting the operations.

Although, no casualty was reported, but it is yet to be ascertained the scale of operations impacted at the facility during the incident.

Tata Electronics said in a statement that the company is investigating the cause behind the blaze and will take necessary steps to ensure safety of its employees and stakeholders.

“There has been an unfortunate incident of fire at our plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Our emergency protocols at the plant ensured that all our employees are safe,” a Tata Electronics spokesperson said.

As per Reuters, citing fire services officials, the fire, described as chemical-related, caused a building collapse.

Investigation is also underway to ascertain whether the adjacent building gearing up for smartphone manufacturing by the year end was also impacted.

This comes close on the heels of Tata Electronics looking to double the headcount of its Hosur plant.

On the hiring roadmap, Tata Sons’ chairman N Chandrasekaran said that Tata Electronics is set to hire more than 20,000 people at its new iPhone assembly plant in Hosur soon, bringing the total number of employees at the facility to 40,000.

The company is looking to expand its Apple enclosure production in Hosur, setting up two new units and worker dormitories.

Notably, as Apple shifted its supply chain from China, 1 in 7 iPhones are now made in India.

Apple is said to be in advanced talks with Murugappa Group and Tata Group’s Titan to make iPhone camera modules in the country.

Additionally, the tech giant is also reportedly looking to begin manufacturing iPhone Pro and Pro Max models in India, starting with the iPhone 16 series as early as this fiscal year.

Apart from iPhones, Apple is also considering manufacturing other flagship devices, iPads and AirPods in the country.
